“ARSENIC AND OLD LACE” AUDITIONS RESCHEDULED TO NOV. 16 & 17

TUSCALOOSA, AL – Theatre Tuscaloosa’s open auditions for “Arsenic and Old Lace” by Joseph Kesselring will now take place Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. and Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Wilson Carr Rehearsal Hall on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College (9500 Old Greensboro Road).


This classic comedy reminds audiences that home is where quirks are celebrated, and where even the most unexpected surprises await. In this case they await the hero, Mortimer Brewster, a drama critic who must deal with his crazy, murderous family and local police in Brooklyn, New York, all while debating whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he loves.


Theatre Tuscaloosa All-Star Cast member and Board President-Elect Ray Taylor leads this production as director. He is joined by Therrin Eber, scenic designer; Lyndell McDonald, lighting designer; Molly Page, fight coordinator; and Jeanette Waterman, costume designer. 


“Because December tends to be incredibly hectic, we’ve decided to move our ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ auditions to November,Theatre Tuscaloosa Managing Director Adam Miller said. “Even though rehearsals won’t start until after the holidays, this earlier schedule will give actors an opportunity to lock in their first show of 2026 early!


Various roles are available including the following: Abby Brewster (female, 50s-70s), Martha Brewster (female, 50s-70s), Elaine Harper (female, 25-40), Mortimer Brewster (male, 30s-50s), Teddy Brewster (male, 40s-60s), Jonathan Brewster (male, 40s-60s), Dr. Einstein (45-55), The Reverend Dr. Harper (male, 50s-70s), Officer Brophy (male, 25-45), Officer Klein (male, 25-45), Officer O’Hara (male, any age). Those who audition should prepare to participate in cold readings from the script. A monologue is not required, but auditionees are welcome to prepare one if desired. Auditionees are encouraged to arrive up to 30 minutes ahead. Auditionees must submit the online audition form at https://www.theaterforms.com/theatretusc/arsenic/auditionform/ prior to their audition.

Scripts of “Arsenic and Old Lace” are available to read in the Theatre Tuscaloosa Management Office in advance (recommended); however, scripts may not leave the premises. The office is open Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to noon.


The final rehearsal schedule will be announced after casting. Rehearsals will start in early January and will generally run Monday through Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons until closer to performance weeks. “Arsenic and Old Lace” performances run Feb. 19 - March 1, 2026, in the Bean-Brown Theatre on the Martin Campus of Shelton State Community College.
