TUSCALOOSA, AL – Michael Thomas Walker began his tenure as Theatre Tuscaloosa’s new Executive Producer at Shelton State Community College (SSCC) on January 5, 2026.
Walker spent the last 11 years teaching acting and voice at the University of Montevallo and served as chair of the theatre department for the past three years. He holds a BA in Theatre from the University of Alabama and an MFA in Acting from Rutgers University.
“As a proud graduate of the University of Alabama and having had the experience of directing several shows for Theatre Tuscaloosa, I was instantly drawn to this position,” said Walker. “The kindness and generosity of board members, the Theatre Tuscaloosa staff, and the administration at Shelton State Community College have made it abundantly clear to me that Theatre Tuscaloosa is rightfully regarded as a very special place. My wife Kate, our son Benjamin, and I, are all excited to immerse ourselves in Tuscaloosa’s vibrant community.”
Walker becomes the fourth individual to serve as Executive Producer, following in the footsteps of Paul Looney, Michael Carr, and Tina Turley. Although new to the position, he is not entirely new to Theatre Tuscaloosa, having directed Hairspray (2014), The 39 Steps (2017), and Best of Enemies (2023). Walker’s resume extends far beyond Tuscaloosa, however, as he worked as an actor and director in New York City for more than 13 years including Off-Broadway, national tours, and film and television appearances. He has also written and co-written theatrical scripts.
“Theatre matters,” said Walker. “It brings us together in a room to wrestle with big questions—who we are, who we’ve been, and who we want to be. My commitment as executive producer is to champion bold storytelling, deepen our connection to this community, and ensure this theatre remains both artistically ambitious and profoundly welcoming.”
As Executive Producer, Walker concurrently joins the faculty of SSCC’s theatre program, lending his experience and industry connections to Alabama’s Community College of the Fine Arts.
“We are confident that Michael is the right fit for both Theatre Tuscaloosa and Shelton State,” said SSCC Dean of Workforce Development and Strategic Initiatives Nicole DuBose. “As both an accomplished educator and theatre artist, he’s exactly the right person to inspire greatness from students and community members alike.”
The SSCC administration and Theatre Tuscaloosa operate as partners, with an independent, volunteer board of directors leading Theatre Tuscaloosa. As Executive Producer, Walker will bridge the missions and goals of the two organizations.
“We are thrilled to have Michael Walker at the helm of Theatre Tuscaloosa,” said Board President Dr. Steven Yates. “We know Michael’s vision for Theatre Tuscaloosa’s future will energize every aspect of our operations – productions, educational outreach, community engagement, and new and exciting programs yet to come!”
Walker will direct the summer musical, Big Fish, as his first show as Executive Producer. Meanwhile, he is mastering the inner workings of Theatre Tuscaloosa and SSCC, planning the following season, and making connections throughout the community.
“I believe in Theatre Tuscaloosa, in the power of this art form, and in the idea that we make our best work when we make it together,” said Walker. “Let’s get started!”
