A Taste of Improv

Sunday, September 23, 2018

2:00 p.m.

SSCC Dance Studio

Theatre Tuscaloosa is partnering with Positively Funny, Inc. and the PFI Comedy Institute of Birmingham to bring you A Taste of Improv, a workshop that will give you a "taste" of what improv classes are all about. In this 2-hour workshop, we'll cover some of the base concepts of improv, including the power of "Yes, and," living in the moment, jumpstarting your creativity, and boosting your self-confidence."

David Grissom David Grissom

About the Instructor

David Grissom is the Chief Creative Officer of Positively Funny, Inc., a Birmingham-based improv group now celebrating their eighth anniversary. David received his improv training at the famed Second City in Chicago. Before founding PFI, David was a staff writer for television shows including 3rd Rock from the SunThat 70s ShowWill & Grace (original), Weeds, and Grey's Anatomy!

Tuition is $20*, and the class is limited to the first 15 people to register. Students must be at least 16 years of age.

*Those who decide to continue their improv training with Basic Improv: The Fundamentals (see below) will have the tuition of this workshop applied to the full cost of the 8-week long course.

Basic Improv: The Fundamentals

Dates: Oct. 1-Nov. 26 (No class Nov. 12)

Day/Time: Mondays; 6pm-8pm

Location: SSCC Dance Studio

Our partnership with Positively Funny, Inc. continues with Basic Improv: The Fundamentals, an expanded eight-week workshop.  Students start to learn the skills needed to create strong improvised scenes. Some of these skills include building ensemble, giving and taking focus, object work, and, one of the most crucial fundamentals of improv, the concept of “yes, and.”

Students get up and play a variety of exercises and games that train the analytical side of the brain to focus on simple goals, freeing the creative side and silencing the negative thoughts that can make us freeze in performance. These games are high energy cooperation and a ton of fun to play. No previous experience is required. Students must be at least 16 years of age. Tuition is $195 for this 8-week course.
